The Connection Between Rhinos And Humans

Rhino horns and human hair are both mainly made of keratin.

Keratin is this fibrous protein that’s also found in our hair and nails. Even though people often think our horns are made of bone, they’re actually just a dense mass of keratin.

Keratin is a fibrous structural protein that’s super important for the structure and protection of animal tissues.

It comes in two main types – alpha-keratin (α-keratin) and beta-keratin (β-keratin).

Alpha-keratin has this cool coiled, helical structure, while beta-keratin is more like a pleated sheet.

Alpha-keratin is what makes up our horns and nails, and beta-keratin is found in the feathers, claws, and beaks of birds and reptiles.

Rhinos’ horns, much like your hair and nails, keep growing throughout their lives.

They’re made of keratin, human hair and rhino horns differ in their makeup and structure, which influences their hardness.

Hair consists of loosely arranged, hollow keratin fibers, while rhino horns are made up of tightly packed, keratinized cells that contain calcium and melanin at their core. Because of this structural difference, hair is flexible and relatively soft, while horns are tough and solid.

Rhinos are heavily hunted for their horns, particularly in East Asia and Africa.

In countries like China, rhino horn is primarily used in traditional medicine, as well as for making dagger handles and decorative items in the Middle East and Africa.

Additionally, in places like Vietnam, rhino horn is seen as a status symbol, making it one of the largest markets for this product.
