Every year, the Sikh community celebrates the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the nine Sikh gurus, known as Guru Nanak Jayanti.

This festival is also referred to as Gurpurab or Guru Nanak Prakash Utsav.

It holds great significance and reverence among Sikhs.

History

Sikhs around the globe honor the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, who was born in Rai Bhoi Ki Talwandi, now called Nanaka Sahib in Lahore, Pakistan, in 1469.

Guru Nanak Jayanti falls on a full moon day in the month of Kartik (October-November).

This year, we celebrate his 556th birth anniversary on November 5, 2025, which is a Wednesday.

The full moon will start at 10:36 PM on November 4, 2025, and will conclude at 6:48 PM on November 5, 2025.

Significance And Celebrations

Guru Nanak Jayanti is one of the most important festivals in Sikhism, celebrating the birth of Guru Nanak and highlighting his teachings, which include honesty, equality, selfless service, and devotion to one God.

The festivities kick off two days before Guru Nanak Jayanti with Akhand Path, a continuous 48 hours reading of the Guru Granth Sahib (the holy scripture of the Sikhs) in the Gurudwaras.

A procession known as Nagarkirtan occurs the day before, led by the Panj Pyaras, where leaders convey Guru Nanak’s message while devotees sing hymns.

Prabhat Pheris, or early morning processions, begin at the Gurudwara on the main day, during which time devotees recite katha and sing hymns.

After this comes langar, a communal meal prepared by Gurudwara volunteers.
