On Wednesday (November 5, 2025), Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed the victorious Indian women’s cricket team to his home, praising the players for their “incredible resilience and comeback” in the World Cup after a challenging period that included three straight losses.

He also mentioned the online trolling the players experienced following their early defeats and praised them for their incredible mental toughness in coming back and creating history.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur reminisced about their previous meeting with PM Modi after the 2017 World Cup, noting that they had come without a trophy then, but she hopes they will find success and have more opportunities to meet him.

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana expressed that the Prime Minister’s encouragement was a significant source of inspiration.

In the 2017 Women’s World Cup final, India lost to England by just nine runs.The team then met the Prime Minister.

During their chat, Deepti Sharma shared with PM Modi that she had been looking forward to meeting him since 2017, recalling how he had encouraged them to keep striving for their dreams.

PM Modi responded, “You’ve done an amazing job. Cricket in India is more than just a sport; it’s become a part of our lives. When cricket does well, the country feels good, and when it doesn’t, everyone feels the impact”.

During a light-hearted conversation at his residence, the women cricketers discussed their World Cup victory, and the PM even asked Player of the Tournament Deepti Sharma about her viral Hanuman tattoo on social media.

The room erupted in laughter when top-order batter Harleen Deol inquired about PM Modi’s skin care routine.

“I don’t really think about that”, the PM chuckled in response.

When the Prime Minister pointed out her “Jai Shri Ram” Instagram bio and her Lord Hanuman tattoo, Deepti beamed and mentioned that they give her strength.

Harmanpreet asked PM Modi how he manages to stay focused on the present all the time.

The Prime Minister shared that it has become a part of his life and a habit over the years.

He also reminisced about some unforgettable moments from the team’s journey, like Harleen Deol’s amazing catch against England in 2021, which he had shared on social media.

The Prime Minister affectionately mentioned Harmanpreet keeping the ball after the World Cup final.

She remarked that she felt lucky the ball came her way.

In a humorous tone, PM Modi also talked about Amanjot Kaur’s juggling catch in the final.

He joked that while catching, she must have been focused on the ball, but after catching it, her eyes were probably on the trophy.

Kranti Gaud told the Prime Minister that her brother is a huge fan of his, and he offered an open invitation for them to meet.

PM Modi called on athletes to promote fitness and inspire girls in sports.

He urged the players to spread the Fit India message, especially among young girls throughout the country.

He expressed his worries about the rising issue of obesity and highlighted the significance of fitness and physical activity.

He also motivated them to visit their schools and encourage young minds to engage in sports.

The players will now return to their hometowns.

However, Shafali Verma will travel to Nagaland to lead the North Zone team in the upcoming Inter-Zonal T20 tournament.

India’s World Cup victory was a pivotal moment for women’s cricket in the nation, realizing years of hard work and near misses.

Harmanpreet’s team triumphed over a strong South Africa to become only the fourth team to claim the ODI title.
