Elon Musk’s Starlink internet service will be launched first in India’s Maharashtra state, which is home to the financial hub of Mumbai.

The rollout of Starlink, designed to deliver high speed internet to remote areas via low-orbit satellites, has ignited intense discussions in India regarding issues like predatory pricing and spectrum allocation.

With projections indicating that India will surpass 900 million internet users by the end of the year, Starlink was granted a license in June.

Launch In India

Maharashtra is set to be the first Indian state to officially partner with Starlink, as stated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the Musk-owned platform X late Wednesday.

“This partnership… will position the state at the forefront of India’s satellite-enabled digital infrastructure”.

Starlink’s VP of business operations, Lauren Dreyer, expressed her enthusiasm for advancing India’s digital aspirations.

“I’m eager to connect schools, healthcare facilities, and more in the most isolated and underserved regions once Starlink gets the final green light”, Dreyer mentioned in a statement.

In March, India’s largest telecom providers, Jio Platforms and its competitor Bharti Airtel, revealed agreements with SpaceX to provide Starlink internet to their users.

This year, major tech companies aiming to attract users in the world’s fifth-largest economy have made a series of announcements about their expansion into the country.

In October, Google revealed plans to invest $15 billion in India over the next five years to establish a massive data center and AI base, marking the largest AI hub it is developing outside the United States.
