Zak Crawley and Joe Root put in a solid effort on Saturday (December 20, 2025) to keep England’s slim chances alive as they aim for a record 435 to win the third Test against Australia and preserve the Ashes.

The Match’s Second Innings Summary

By tea, England had managed to reach 106-2, with Crawley unbeaten on 36 and Root at 37 after navigating the second session with just one wicket down, that of Ollie Pope.

England must secure a win to stay in the five-match series after suffering a heavy defeat by 8 wickets in Perth and Brisbane.

Australia, being the defending champions, only need a draw to keep the urn.

England took six wickets before lunch, wrapping up Australia’s second innings at 349, with Travis Head scoring a remarkable 170 and Alex Carey contributing 72.

They had just 10 minutes left to bat before the break, but trouble hit in the second over when Ben Duckett, who was on four, edged a delivery from Pat Cummins to Marnus Labuschagne at second slip.

Number three Pope has had a tough time throughout the series and was thought to be on his last chance with Jacob Bethell waiting in the wings.

He couldn’t step up again, getting out for 17 as Labuschagne pulled off a remarkable one-handed catch at full stretch in the slips, again off Cummins.

Crawley, played it safe, facing 80 balls to build a vital 75-run partnership with Root, who is in need of a significant score to rescue his team.

With attendance surpassing 200,000 over the first four days – a record for the Adelaide Oval, which has been hosting Tests since 1884 – they face a daunting challenge.

No team has ever successfully chased more than 316 at this venue, and the highest successful run chase in Test history remains 418 by the West Indies against Australia at St. Johns in 2003.
