To maintain accountability when filing taxes, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has mandated that you link your Aadhaar with your PAN.

If you don’t comply, you might face rejection of your Income Tax Returns and your PAN card could get deactivated.

Make sure to finish linking your PAN with Aadhaar by December 31, 2025.

Starting January 1, 2026, any PAN cards that aren’t linked to Aadhaar will be inactive, which could limit your access to financial and tax services.

According to a circular from the Ministry of Finance dated April 3, 2025, anyone who got their PAN using the Aadhaar enrolment ID submitted before October 1, 2024, needs to inform the Income Tax Department of their Aadhaar number within the given timeframe.

The Ministry Of Finance Circular

Using the powers granted by sub-section (2A) of section 139AA of the Income-tax Act, 1961 (43 of 1961),

The Central Government announces that every individual who received a permanent account number based on the Enrolment ID from the Aadhaar application submitted before October 1, 2024, must notify their Aadhaar number to the Principal Director General of Income Tax (Systems) or the Director General of Income-tax (Systems) or an authorized person by these authorities by December 31, 2025, or any other date specified by the Central Board of Direct Taxes.
