World’s Top Player Magnus Carlsen took down the current world champion D Gukesh in the first round of Norway Chess held in Stavanger, showcasing his skills in the endgame to earn three solid points in a match that went on for more than four hours.

The traditional chess match wrapped up after 55 moves, as Carlsen took advantage of a significant error made by the Indian competitor.Carlsen is now tied for the lead with American Grandmaster and world No.2 Hikaru Nakamura, who won against American Fabiano Caruana, with both players scoring three points.

India’s Arjun Erigaisi earned 1.5 points by overcoming China’s top player Wei Yi in an Armageddon match, following a draw in their classical game.Wei received a point from the match.

The scoring system of the tournament grants three points for a victory in the Classical format. If the game ends in a draw, both players earn one point each and then battle for an extra half-point in Armageddon.

The much-awaited Carlsen-Gukesh match had the Norwegian, using the white pieces, effectively putting pressure on his opponent, leading to a significant mistake in the endgame.

“I just realized I have no clue about anything”,Carlsen confessed regarding his choice to play the Jobava London opening, which didn’t go as expected.

Gukesh, using the black pieces, managed to counter Carlsen’s white advantage by the 11th move, making the Norwegian think for more than 15 minutes.

“My goal was to surprise him”. Carlsen said, “I answered in the most wussiest manner possible, as you usually do especially in the first round”.

Carlsen said following the game, “It’s still fairly equal, but there’s this slight imbalance as his pawn structure is a little bit ruined”. He conceded that Gukesh “Performed incredibly well for a considerable amount of time”.

Carlsen stayed humble when asked about the significance of defeating the current world champion, saying, “Not necessarily, but I’m content because every victory in this competition is difficult to obtain”.

World No. 4 Erigaisi made an impression earlier in the day when he defeated Wei Yi in Armageddon following their first 54-move tie. Erigaisi won on time in Armageddon after playing aggressively to force the draw with black pieces.

Gukesh, Carlsen, Caruana, Nakamura, Erigaisi, and Wei Yi are among the top six players in the men’s division, while the current world champion Ju Wenjun is joined in the women’s division by Lei Tingjie, Humpy, Anna Muzychuk, Vaishali, and Sarasadat Khademalsharieh.

Men : Magnus Carlsen (Norway) defeated D Gukesh (India); Fabiano Caruana (USA) lost against Hikaru Nakamura (USA); and Wei Yi (China) drew with Arjun Erigaisi (India).

Women’s: India’s Koneru Humpy defeated India’s R Vaishali; China’s Lei Tingjie drew with Ju Wenjun; Ukraine’s Anna Muzychuk drew with Spain’s Sara Khadem.
