At Friday’s Asian Athletics Championships, Indian athletes kept making waves. On the penultimate day of the meet at Gumi, South Korea, heptathlete Nandini Agasara, high jumper Pooja, and long distance runner Gulveer Singh all excelled and won gold medals. In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Parul Chaudhary took home silver with a national record time of 9:12.46 seconds.

Following Friday’s performance, India maintained its second-place medal total with eight gold, seven silver, and three bronze. With 26 medals-15 gold, 8 silver, and 3 bronze. China leads the field.

Gulveer Double Gold

Army runner Gulveer won one of India’s first gold medals in the men’s 5,000-meter event, breaking the Asian championships mark of 13:34.47 seconds set by Qatar’s Mohamed Al-Garni in 2015.

Gulveer, a bronze winner from the Hangzhou Asian Games, became the first Indian to win back-to-back gold in the current Asian meet with a measured race. On the first day, the 26-year-old had won the gold in the men’s 10,000-meter race.

“I wanted to place first in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races at Gumi. Even if the weather wasn’t perfect for either event”, Gulveer remarked. “I followed my plan to get a good timing”.

With a time of 13:24.97 seconds, Kieran Tuntivate of Thailand came in close second, and Nagiya Mori of Japan came in third with a time of 13:25.06 seconds. Abhishek Pal, another Indian competitor, finished sixth with a time of 13:33.51 seconds.

History Is Made By Pooja

Pooja, the daughter of Haryana Mason, made history by being the second Indian woman to win an Asian high jump gold medal. Bobby Aloysius had previously won gold in the continental meet in 2000 and silver in 2002.

A personal best and the nation’s second gold of the day were achieved by the young 18-year-old, who cleared the bar at 1.89m. Despite her best efforts, she failed to clear 1.92 meters on all three tries.

“I had a good day because I was one of the senior continental level champions,” Pooja remarked.

The Third Indian Athlete To Win Gold

Nandini Agasara won India’s third gold medal after defeating China’s Liu Jingyi in a thrilling comeback to take first place on the heptathlon podium. Before the 800m, the Indian was 54 points behind her Chinese competitor, but she pulled off a spectacular comeback to finish with 5941 points.

Cai Juan Chen of Chinese Taipei finished third with 5608 points, while Jingyi came in second with 5869 points. After Soma Biswas (2005) and Swapna Barman (2017), Nandini was only the third Indian woman to win a gold medal in the Asian heptathlon.

Parul Breaks 3000M  National Record

In the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Parul Chaudhary ran well and set a new national record of 9:12.96 seconds on her way to finishing in silver.

“My plan for the race was to follow the front-runner, Norah Jeruto Tanui of Kazakhstan.” Despite my best efforts, she overtook me in the last lap. Improving the national record makes me delighted”, Parul remarked.
