Earthworms are super helpful little guys in the soil. These squirmy creatures break down dead and decaying organic matter into nutrient rich humus, which helps plants grow. They also create tiny channels and holes that aerate the soil and enhance drainage.

Interestingly, earthworms don’t have lungs. They actually breathe through their skin. They don’t have eyes either; instead, they use receptors in their skin to detect light and touch. Earthworms have five hearts that pump blood throughout their bodies.

Earthworms are long and slender, with segmented bodies that are reddish brown or pinkish. Typically, they measure between 3-12 cm long and have no legs, wiggling or stretching when touched. They are odorless and not aggressive at all.

Earthworms really enjoy wet environments. During the monsoon or in areas of your house that leak, they tend to show up. Actually, when the soil outside is saturated and flooded, they move to drier but still damp areas often your house. Cracks, gaps, and other openings in the foundation, as well as bathroom drains or tiles, provide them with easy entry.

People might spot earthworms lurking under their bathroom mats, around drains or in the corners of floors, in damp basements or storage rooms, or even behind washing machines and sinks. They tend to steer clear of light and look for dark, moist, and undisturbed areas.

Getting Rid Of Earthworms

5 step strategy to assist you in removing earthworms from your home:

  • Repair leaks, enhance ventilation, and consider using a dehumidifier if necessary.
  • Spread diatomaceous earth or salt near entry points (be careful not to overdo it. Salt can harm tiles and plants).
  • Maintain a clean and dry area.Earthworms can’t thrive on dry surfaces.
  • Ensure that water doesn’t pool around the foundation of the house.
  • Look for any gaps around doors, drains, and windows. Apply silicone sealant where necessary.

Don’t Do This

Using strong pesticides is definitely a bad idea. Earthworms aren’t pests in the usual way. Actually, they’re beneficial for your garden just not in your home.

Eliminating earthworms without first sealing off entry points, or they’ll just return. Another frequent error is leaving food or wastewater close to doorways or drains, which tends to promote worm activity.

This is so informational thank you! Any information on or correlation to what you wrote with slugs? I am trying diatomaceous earth and I use that and an spray that literally liquifies them instantly upon contact but the rain brings them right back! The beer trap works but is nasty to clean! Haha! If any insight great! If not no worries as it is not the topic of your post! I appreciate your post and knowledge regardless! Thanks!
