Beginning August 1, people everyday UPI routines on apps such as Google Pay and PhonePe might seem a bit different. The NPCI (National Payments Corporation of India) is implementing some backend rule changes to make balance checks, autopay requests, payment failures, and linked account verifications smoother.

New Time Slots For UPI Autopay Requests

If people got automatic payments set up, like for OTT subscriptions, rent, or SIPs, those UPI Autopay requests are going to be timed better now.

Starting August 1, UPI apps will need to send these requests between 12 AM and 7 AM. This change aims to reduce server congestion and delays during busy hours. People still get notifications, but they’ll come early in the morning.

Limit Balance Checks Now

One of the unnoticed data-intensive tasks on UPI is checking your balance, particularly when using biometric authentication like Face ID or fingerprints. To avoid system overload, there will now be a cap on the number of times you can check your balance each day.

NPCI hasn’t revealed the specific limit yet, but it’s meant to prevent misuse of the system, especially from bots or users who check frequently.

Faster Updates On Failed Transactions

We’ve all experienced UPI payments stuck in limbo- money taken from your account, but the recipient hasn’t received it. NPCI is tackling this by speeding up timelines. Starting next month, UPI apps will need to show the real payment status (success/fail) within seconds, rather than leaving it as “Processing” or “Pending” for ages. This means less confusion and fewer screenshots sent to puzzled vendors.

Linking accounts will be more secure. UPI apps will implement a stricter verification process when you link a new bank account. This might include extra checks from the bank to ensure the account is yours. It adds a bit of hassle, sure, but it also lowers the chances of mistakenly or fraudulently linking accounts. These updates are minor but beneficial.

They’re primarily designed to make UPI smoother, safer, and less frustrating during busy times or payment issues. You won’t need to change how you use UPI, but starting August 1, you’ll see the system operating a bit more efficiently.
