On Monday, India strongly criticized the US after Donald Trump slapped a 25 percent tariff on Indian imports, along with other penalties related to its trade ties with Russia. India described the targeting of Delhi as “unjustified and unreasonable,” asserting that it would take “all necessary measures” to protect its “national interests and economic security”.

Just days after Trump announced a new round of hefty tariffs, Russia hit back on Monday at the US government for raising tariffs and putting sanctions on them, claiming that the US is using a “neocolonial” approach against certain nations to keep its dominance in Washington.

Maria Zakharova, the spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry, stated that no tariff wars or sanctions “can stop the natural flow of history”.

She described sanctions and restrictions as a “sad reality” of the current historical moment that impacts the whole globe, adding that the US struggles to accept its “loss of dominance in the new world order”.

“Sanctions and restrictions have sadly turned into a hallmark of our times, affecting nations worldwide. Refusing to acknowledge the decline of its supremacy in a rising multipolar world, Washington keeps pushing a neocolonial agenda, using politically driven economic pressure on those who opt for an independent path in the global arena”, she stated.

The Russian Foreign Ministry’s response came just hours after India released a strong statement regarding the US imposing excessive tariffs on New Delhi for trading with Moscow during the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Zakharova also mentioned that Russia will strengthen its cooperation with Global South countries and push back against the “illegal unilateral sanctions.”

When it comes to imports from Russia, India mentioned, “These are necessary due to the global market situation. It’s interesting to note that the very countries criticizing India are also trading with Russia. Unlike us, this trade isn’t even a crucial national necessity for them”.

Donald Trump has criticized India for its trade with Russia.

India and Russia’s response to the US followed President Donald Trump’s warning that he would significantly increase tariffs on India as the country continues its trade with Russia.
