Love shiny nails that bring some bling to your style?. But,The European Union (EU) has put a ban on gel nail polishes all over the continent, starting September 1.

Why, You Wonder?

Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, or TPO for short, is now prohibited in all cosmetic products after European regulators found it could be harmful to humans.

Most gel nail polishes contain TPO as a ‘photoinitiator’, which helps the polish dry quicker under UV light and keeps the color vibrant for a longer time.

What Exactly Is Gel Polish?

Gel nails are a type of manicure where a liquid gel polish is applied to the nails and cured using UV or LED light.

The benefit of gel nails is that they tend to last longer than traditional nail polish and offer a shiny, salon quality finish.

Problems

  • The use of strong chemical solvents, acrylates, or photo initiators in these paints can make your skin more prone to irritation, allergies, or even nail damage if used for a long time.
  • When curing nails, UV lamps are involved, and they are closely linked to skin aging and can even harm the skin.
  • If gel paints are applied too often and not removed properly, your natural nails might become thin and weak over time.

Why is the EU’s decision beneficial in the long run?

The ingredient restricted by the European Union (EU), known as TPO (Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide), is a chemical compound that acts as a photo-initiator in gel nail paints.

It helps the gel set quickly when exposed to UV/LED light.

Why is it considered risky?

It can be harmful to reproduction (potentially impacting fertility or endangering the unborn child), and it is categorized as a C.M.R. substance (Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, or Reprotoxic).

Additionally, it has been associated with skin allergies and sensitization.

Safer Alternatives

If you’re looking for beautiful, long lasting nails without the risky ingredients.

  • People can go for regular nail polish. While it might not last as long, it’s definitely a safer choice. Since they don’t contain harmful chemicals like formaldehyde and toluene.
  • Press-on nails are also a fantastic choice because they’re non-toxic, super easy to apply, and they keep your nails away from harmful UV rays.
  • UV-free gel polishes use safer photo initiators and only cure with LED light, which lowers the risk.
  • To strengthen your natural nails-Regular buffing, taking care of your cuticles, and using nail strengthening oils or serums can help you achieve a polished look without relying on artificial products.
