Jannik Sinner called for a medical timeout. The exact reason wasn’t clear right away. During a slow moment in the match, but he managed to regain control and secured a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 win against Felix Auger-Aliassime in the U.S. Open semifinals on Friday night (September 5, 2025).

It bringing him one step closer to winning his second title in a row at Flushing Meadows.

Since Roger Federer won five consecutive trophies from 2004 to 2008, no one has been able to repeat as the men’s champion in New York.

The top seeded Sinner, a 24 year old from Italy, is set to go up against No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz, a 22 year old from Spain, this Sunday.

This matchup marks the first time in tennis history that two men will compete in three consecutive Grand Slam finals in one season.

The number one position in the rankings is at stake, and it will be in front of an audience at Arthur Ashe Stadium that is likely to feature President Donald Trump.

“It’s a really special day. It’s another incredible final”, Sinner commented on the matchup happening on Sunday.

Sinner made it to his fifth straight title match at a Slam. He took down Taylor Fritz at Flushing Meadows a year ago and then beat Alexander Zverev at the Australian Open in January.

He faced a loss against Alcaraz at the French Open in June, but bounced back to defeat his rival at Wimbledon in July.

Alcaraz made it to this point by beating 24 time major champion Novak Djokovic with scores of 6-4, 7-6 (4), 6-2 earlier on Friday.

Sinner ‘Semi Final Performance’

Against Auger-Aliassime, Sinner was outstanding in the first set, but just okay in the second. His streak of 38 service holds, which went back to the third round, came to an end when Auger-Aliassime hit a 99 mph inside out forehand winner for a break, celebrating it with a loud shout.

That forehand was crucial for the 25 year old Canadian aiming for his first major final, having already knocked out No. 3 Alexander Zverev, No. 8 Alex de Minaur, and No. 15 Andrey Rublev.

When he wrapped up that set with a 117 mph ace, Auger-Aliassime had won 12 out of 13 points, making the match tied.

After that set, Sinner went off the court for some medical help, and while it wasn’t clear what was up, he looked perfectly fine when he came back from the locker room. His performance was solid too.

Later, he mentioned it was “nothing too bad” and “nothing serious,” but didn’t go into details.

After only managing three winners and six unforced errors in the second set, Sinner returned to form in the third: 11 winners and four unforced errors.

More of that continued in the fourth set, when, after saving five break points early on – he saved 9 out of 10 throughout the night. Sinner broke to take a 3-2 lead. Just 25 minutes later, it was all over, and Sinner had secured his 33rd win in his last 34 Grand Slam matches, which includes an impressive unbeaten streak of 27 on hard courts.
