India’s leading men’s doubles badminton pair, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty, have successfully secured a title opportunity this year, advancing to the final of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 with a straight game win on Saturday (September 13, 2025).
The world No. 9 pair took down Chinese Taipei’s Bing-Wei Lin and Chen Cheng Kuan with scores of 21-17, 21-15, marking their first final of the season after enduring six tough semifinal losses.
It signifies a remarkable comeback after a tough year that challenged both their physical and mental resilience.
A year back, the Indian duo faced the heartbreak of missing an Olympic medal when they were defeated by Malaysia’s Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik.
They managed to regain some pride by clinching a bronze at the World Championships, becoming only the third Indian pair, following Saina Nehwal and PV Sindhu, to earn multiple medals at this event.
The eighth seeded Indians are set to take on the winners of the other semifinal, which features China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang going up against Chinese Taipei’s Fang-Chih Lee and Fang-Jen Lee.
Satwik has faced challenges with back and elbow injuries in the months following the Olympics, and then he experienced personal loss when his father passed away from a heart attack in February.
His return to form was once again interrupted by a case of chickenpox.
Chirag also dealt with a persistent back injury, which left them both struggling to find their rhythm and achieve results.
Thus, Saturday’s victory was not just about their performance.
It was a testament to their resilience, showcasing the determination that once made them pioneers for Indian doubles on the global stage.
