Netflix is gearing up to bring Catan to the screen, announcing a major development deal to create films and TV shows – both scripted and unscripted.
It was inspired by the beloved board game.
Popular Board Game “Catan”
Originally released in 1995 as The Settlers of Catan, this award-winning game has sold over 45 million copies globally and has been translated into more than 40 languages.
Players compete to establish settlements and trade limited resources on the fictional island of Catan.
Catan is joining Netflix’s growing roster of game-based adaptations, which includes Arcane, Castlevania, Assassin’s Creed, and the upcoming Monopoly competition series.
The streaming giant has teamed up with Asmodee and Catan Studio to develop what they’re calling an “epic storytelling universe” based on Klaus Teuber’s legendary strategy game.
The upcoming projects will include both live-action and animated formats, marking the first time the Catan franchise will be adapted for the screen.
Producers involved in this venture include Darren Kyman from Asmodee, Pete Fenlon of Catan Studio, and Guido and Benjamin Teuber, the sons of the late Catan creator Klaus Teuber. Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment is also on board as a producer.
“Millions have loved Catan since its inception, and for many, it’s a gateway into modern board gaming”, said Asmodee CEO Thomas Koegler.
He added,”I’m excited to see the game reach a broader audience who will explore the depth of its universe”.
