On Tuesday, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Atlas, a highly awaited AI-powered web browser centered around its well-known chatbot.

This launch represents OpenAI’s latest effort to leverage its 800 million weekly active ChatGPT users, as it delves deeper into various facets of users’ online experiences by gathering data on their browsing habits.

This could speed up a larger transition towards AI-driven search, as more users opt for conversational tools that compile information rather than depending on traditional keyword based results from Google – heightening the rivalry between OpenAI and Google.

It directly challenging the supremacy of Google Chrome.

In afternoon trading, shares of Alphabet, the parent company of Chrome, fell by 1.8%.

Earlier, Reuters had reported on OpenAI’s upcoming browser launch.

It’s the newest player in a busy market of AI browsers, which features Perplexity’s Comet, Brave Browser, and Opera’s Neon.

Atlas Web Browser

Atlas allows users to open a ChatGPT sidebar in any window to summarize content, compare products, or analyze data from any site.

In ‘agent mode,’ which is now available for paid users, ChatGPT can interact with websites on their behalf – handling tasks from start to finish, like researching and shopping for a trip.

During a demo on Tuesday, OpenAI developers showed how ChatGPT could find an online recipe and then automatically buy all the ingredients.

The agent went to the Instacart website and added the necessary groceries to the cart – a task that took several minutes to finish.

The browser is now available worldwide on Apple’s macOS. Versions for Windows, iOS, and Android will be launched later.

Led by Sam Altman, OpenAI shook up the tech industry with the release of ChatGPT in late 2022.

After its initial success, the company has encountered tough competition from Google and startup Anthropic and has been looking for new growth opportunities.

Google New Features

Last month, Google rolled out its Gemini AI model in Chrome for U.S. users, with plans to extend Gemini to the iOS Chrome app too.

Even with rising competition, Google Chrome has maintained its lead, boasting a 71.9% market share in the global browser market as of September.

Google has been working on ways to adapt to changing search behaviors since ChatGPT’s arrival.

Depending on the query, each Google search result can now show an AI overview, or AI Mode, next to traditional links, giving users a chatbot-like experience.
