After suffering injuries during the third One-Day International match between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground, Indian vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was discharged from the hospital on Saturday.

Iyer was injured when he dove to catch Alex Carey. Due to internal bleeding from a spleen laceration, he was admitted to a hospital in Sydney.

“It’s a freak injury, and the medical team is in touch with the hospital. The medical team had advised him to be admitted again, as there was bleeding in his rib cage. We are expecting him to be fine later this week”, the BCCI press release stated.

The BCCI also said,”He is now stable and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, along with specialists in Sydney and India, are pleased with his recovery, and he has been discharged from the hospital today”.

“The BCCI extends its heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Kouroush Haghigi and his team in Sydney, along with Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala in India, for ensuring Shreyas received the best treatment for his injury.

Shreyas will continue to stay in Sydney for follow-up consultations and will return to India once he is deemed fit to fly.

“I’m currently in the recovery process and getting better every passing day. I’m deeply grateful to see all the kind wishes and support I’ve received- it truly means a lot. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts”, Iyer shared on his social media on Thursday.

The Indian middle-order batsman had previously informed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) that he would be taking a ‘break from red ball cricket’ for a while due to stiffness and fatigue issues in his back. The board accepted his request.

During the ODI series, the 30-year-old scored 11 and 68 runs in Perth and Adelaide, respectively, in his two innings of play on the tour.
