It could be an awesome time for female indie artists in India.

There’s a new record label, reportedly the only one in the country, that’s all about supporting female indie artists.

Founded by Sanoli Chowdhury, a musician, music producer, and audio engineer from Bengaluru, along with Vinod Gadher, a music industry pro based in London who also manages Sanoli – Femme Music.

Femme Music, is set to create a space where female voices can take charge, tell their own stories, and build sustainable careers both in India and around the world.

Drawing inspiration from the 90s Riot Grrrl Movement, Sanoli and Vinod recognized that Indian artists often struggle to navigate the music industry.

They launched an NGO called Indie Grrrl back in April last year.

Femme Music is here to support artists not just with management and bookings, but also with publishing rights.

Femme Music has teamed up with AWAL (Artistes Without A Label) for global distribution and PRS for Music in the UK.

They’re also taking care of mixing and mastering for all their tracks.

Debut Release

For their debut release, they’ve announced Nyima Vol.1, a compilation under Nyima Records – one of Femme Music’s key sub-labels that supports English-language singer-songwriters from India looking to connect with audiences beyond borders.

The compilation is set to drop on November 28.

The journey kicked off around April this year, and they already had some artists in mind that they contacted for the release.

They intend to release EPs featuring a few artists from the debut album, broaden their genre focus, host more showcases, and further develop the indie scene.
