In a thrilling first ODI at the JSCA Cricket Stadium in Ranchi on Sunday(November 30,2025), India defeated South Africa by 17 runs thanks to Virat Kohli’s brilliant century, his 136-run partnership with Rohit Sharma, a fiery spell from Harshit Rana, and Kuldeep Yadav’s performance in the middle overs.

Match Summary

Earlier, Kohli’s 52nd ODI century helped India post 349 for 8 after being put in to bat first by South Africa’s stand-in captain Aiden Markram.

Kohli showcased his skill and dominance in the format he plays, scoring a fluent 135 runs off 120 balls, which included seven sixes and 11 fours.

His 136-run partnership with Rohit (who scored 57 off 51) for the second wicket laid the foundation for India’s substantial total on a mostly flat pitch in Ranchi.

Rohit also had a solid opportunity to make his mark after being dropped on his first run, finishing with 57 before being caught by Jansen.

During his innings, Rohit broke Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi’s record for the most sixes in ODI cricket, now boasting 352 sixes, surpassing Afridi’s long-held record.

India’s captain KL Rahul (60) and Ravindra Jadeja (32) provided the Men in Blue with the crucial momentum towards the end, enabling India to set what seemed to be a competitive total.

In their chase of 350, South Africa got off to a rocky start, losing their top three batsmen by the fifth over.

Rana took out both left-handers – Ryan Rickelton and Quinton de Kock – for ducks in his opening over.

Arshdeep Singh then claimed Aiden Markram’s wicket, leaving South Africa struggling at just 11 for three in 4.4 overs.

The middle order for the Proteas, featuring Matthew Breetzke (72), Dewald Brevis (37), and Tony de Zorzi (39), managed to stabilize the innings before Jansen’s explosive 39-ball 70 brought them back into contention.

Bosch maintained the chase until the very end with his 51-ball 67, needing 18 runs off the final six balls before Rohit caught him off Prasidh Krishna.

This win gives India a vital 1-0 lead in the three-match One-Day series.
