The viral rumors circulating on social media about nitrofuran residues in eggs causing cancer are just fueling unnecessary fear about eating them.

Nitrofurans

Nitrofurans are a type of antimicrobial drug that used to be exclusively for poultry and livestock.

These substances are banned not just in India but in several other nations too, mainly because of their long-term use in high doses for lab animals, which has raised concerns about cancer risks.

Even though the level of AOZ (a nitrofuran byproduct) found in a specific brand of eggs was 0.74 micrograms per kilogram – which is under India’s limit of 1 microgram per kilogram – the mere detection of any banned substance abroad heightened consumer fears.

There have been occasional reports of tiny residues from small, unregulated farms, but these instances are rare and usually well below safety limits.

The FSSAI regularly tests market samples, and most of them meet safety standards.

Most research linking nitrofurans to cancer was done on rats, using doses that were hundreds of times greater than any residue found in food.

Eating eggs with trace amounts that are deemed negligible doesn’t equate to consuming harmful doses.

Research on rodents has indicated some limited signs of carcinogenicity at extremely high doses, like an uptick in ovarian tumors in certain mouse strains or kidney tumors in male rats, but how these findings relate to humans is still unclear.

Nitrofurantoin has been used extensively for many years to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) in people, including during pregnancy when necessary, without any established connection to cancer in epidemiological studies.

Nitrofurans are prohibited in food-producing animals due to their potential carcinogenicity with long-term exposure.

A common myth circulating online is that “any egg with antibiotics will directly cause cancer. This is not accurate.

Cancer risk is multifactorial and single exposures rarely translate into disease.

Trace levels found in rare cases are far below harmful doses, and eggs remain completely safe and highly nutritious for the general public.

Eggs are a healthy food choice.Packed with nutrients, eggs are loaded with high protein, vitamin B12, choline, and Omega-3s.

Only those with weakened immune systems should adhere to stricter hygiene practices.

Make sure to eat fully cooked eggs and purchase them from reliable sources.

Simply washing eggs won’t eliminate antibiotic residues, as these are internal rather than on the surface.

There’s no evidence that eggs from regulated markets in India are cancer-causing.
