Nissan is teaming up with Wayve, an autonomous driving company, to integrate AI-powered systems into their vehicles, as announced on Wednesday(December 10,2025).

This marks the first major deal for the British startup to provide technology to an automaker on a large scale.

Even though fully driverless cars are still a bit away, both companies mentioned in a joint statement that their collaboration will aid in developing systems under real-world conditions.

Wayve’s AI systems, which raised over $1 billion last year, don’t depend on pre-set maps and can navigate in real-time.

In September, Nissan showcased a prototype vehicle that merges Wayve’s AI self-driving software with its advanced laser sensors.

Wayve has begun training its data models and testing them on the streets, under human oversight, in cities like London, Tokyo, and others.

The joint statement released on Wednesday confirmed that Nissan is committed to incorporating Wayve’s AI technology into its own advanced driver-assistance systems, known as ProPILOT.

Nissan intends to launch its first vehicle model featuring the new generation of ProPILOT in Japan by fiscal 2027, with plans to expand to the North American market afterward.

According to their statement, “Nissan is the first automaker to pledge deploying Wayve AI systems at scale across a wide variety of vehicle segments”.

The self-driving car industry has seen quick advancements, with major U.S. companies like Tesla and Waymo, which is part of Google’s parent company Alphabet, conducting tests for robotaxi services.

Kendall mentioned on Wednesday that Wayve’s collaboration with Nissan is “not exclusive”.

The company is also teaming up with ride-hailing giant Uber in London to create and eventually roll out public-road trials for fully autonomous robotaxis.
