Virat Kohli has once again made his mark in cricket history, overtaking the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to become the top run-scorer for India against New Zealand in One Day Internationals.

He hit this milestone during the second ODI of the India vs New Zealand series in January 2026.

Going into the second match(January 14,2025), Kohli was tied with Tendulkar’s long-held record after scoring 93 runs in the first match.

He broke the Master Blaster’s record with a boundary on his very first ball.

This achievement solidifies his position as the most prolific Indian batsman against the Black Caps in the 50-over format.

While Kohli has claimed the No. 1 spot among Indian players, he still trails behind Australian legend Ricky Ponting on the global leaderboard.

Players With Most Runs Against New Zealand (ODIs):

1)Ricky Ponting (Australia): 51 Matches – 1,971 Runs – 45.83 Average

2)Virat Kohli (India): 35 Matches – 1,751+ Runs – 56.40 Average

3)Sachin Tendulkar (India): 42 Matches  – 1,750 Runs – 46.05 Average

He became the fastest player to reach 28,000 international runs in the first ODI in Vadodara on January 11, marking a significant worldwide achievement.

Kohli accomplished this in just 624 innings, easily surpassing Tendulkar’s previous world record of 644 innings.

At the same time, he passed Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara (28,016 runs) to become the second-highest run-scorer in international cricket history, only behind Tendulkar’s total.

The timing of this record-breaking run aligns perfectly with Kohli’s return to the top of the sport.

Men’s ODI Batting Rankings

On January 14, 2026, the ICC officially announced that Kohli has regained the No. 1 position in the Men’s ODI Batting Rankings.

For the first time since July 2021, Kohli has overtaken his teammate Rohit Sharma to reclaim the top spot.

This is his 11th time being the world’s top-ranked ODI batter, showcasing his remarkable longevity at 37 years old.
