Speed is super important for survival in the animal world. Some creatures have developed amazing speed suited to their environments be it on land, in the sky, or underwater.

Fastest Animal (The Water)

Sailfish – This fish is known as the fastest swimmer, hitting speeds of 68 mph (110 km/h) while on the hunt.

Marlin – Another super speedy fish, marlins can swim at 50 mph (80 km/h), which aids them in catching their food effectively.

Fastest Animals(Land)

Cheetah – The clear speed champion on land, the cheetah can hit speeds of 75 mph (120 km/h) in quick bursts over distances of up to 1,500 feet.

Pronghorn Antelope – Native to North America, this creature can maintain speeds of 55 mph (88 km/h) for long stretches, making it the fastest long-distance runner.

Springbok – This antelope from South Africa can also reach speeds of 55 mph (88 km/h), using its nimbleness to dodge predators.

Quarter Horse – Known as the fastest horse breed, it can sprint up to 55 mph (88 km/h) over short distances.

Lion – The “king of the jungle” can run at 50 mph (80 km/h), but only in short bursts, which makes it more of an ambush predator than a long-distance runner.

Fastest Animals (The Air)

Peregrine Falcon – Known as the fastest creature on the planet, the peregrine falcon can dive at an incredible speed of 240 mph (386 km/h) when chasing its prey.

Golden Eagle – This impressive bird can achieve speeds of 200 mph (322 km/h) during a dive, making it a powerful predator in the sky.

White throated Needle tail – The quickest bird in level flight, it can fly at speeds of 105 mph (169 km/h) without needing to dive.

Add to your ‘On Land’ fastest animal: A predator, hungry grizzly (male) bear can sprint up to 40 mls an hour despite his weight 580-to 600 pounds. And will stand up 10 feet tall if his prey is also big. Better not let him catch up with you.
