For the past few years, Google users have been voicing their concerns about the declining quality of search results, but there’s a new feature that hopes to change that.

The tech giant has rolled out a feature named “Preferred Sources” which allows users to customize their search results.

In a blog post, Google mentioned that this new feature lets users include their favorite websites, which will show up in the Search’s “Top Stories” section.

For those who don’t know, the Top Stories section showcases a variety of relevant articles from across the internet and pops up when users look for something tied to a current or trending topic.

The Top Stories section will be packed with new articles from your favorite news outlets and blogs right on the search results page. It turns out that news from your “preferred sources” will also show up in a new section called “from your sources”.

This feature, which has been in testing since June, is now available for Google users in India and the United States.

Since Google is slowly rolling out this new feature, you might have to hang tight for a few days before it shows up on your account.

How can I choose “Preferred Sources” in Google Search?

  • To choose your Preferred Sources in Google Search, just look up a trending topic and click on the icon next to the “Top Stories” section.
  • This will bring up an overlay that lets you search for sources. In the ‘Search for sources’ text box, type in the name of the publication or news outlet.
  • When you’re finished, just click the “Reload results” button at the bottom of the overlay, and Google will start showing you results from your favorite sources in the “Top Stories” section.

Now, you’ll see stories from your chosen sources popping up more often in your Top Stories section, as well as in the specific “From your sources” area on the search results page.

Plus, you can select as many preferred sources as you want.

Google mentioned that over half of the users who got early access to this new feature added more than four sources.

This new tool is great for readers who often feel overwhelmed by low quality content when searching for information online and considering that AI search engines are now sending 96 percent less traffic to news sites and blogs.

This feature could really help publications boost their engagement and traffic.
