Right now in India, documents such as the Aadhaar Card, Voter Card, or Ration Card aren’t enough to verify citizenship.

There have been cases of data breaches from different government databases, along with the production of counterfeit identity cards, which have raised doubts about the reliability of these documents.

To address this issue and establish a secure identity system for Indian citizens, the central government has launched a new initiative – The Smart Citizenship Card.

Why Do We Need It

When the Aadhaar card was initially launched, it was marketed as a reliable system. However, as time passed, various issues emerged, such as Aadhaar data breaches, the establishment of fraudulent Aadhaar centers, and Aadhaar cards falling into the hands of unauthorized individuals.

Consequently, even with a directive from the Supreme Court, the Aadhaar card will not be recognized as definitive proof of citizenship in the upcoming census and surveys.

It’s not just the Aadhaar card,Voter Cards, Ration Cards, and PAN Cards also won’t suffice for proving citizenship.

Data Breaches: Personal info of citizens has been exposed from government databases several times.

Counterfeit ID Cards: Intruders are effortlessly making fake Aadhaar cards, passports, and even birth certificates.

Incomplete Documents: A lot of people, particularly those in the general category, lack essential documents like birth or caste certificates, which can lead to issues when trying to prove their citizenship.

To tackle these issues, the central government is gearing up to introduce the ‘Smart Citizenship Card’.

Smart Citizenship Card

Once the nationwide census and survey are wrapped up, smart citizenship card will be given to eligible citizens. It will serve as the only document needed to verify Indian citizenship.

This card will be a high-tech, secure identity card that will be nearly impossible to counterfeit. With it, citizens can easily confirm their identity and access government benefits.

What Will Happen To The Old Cards

Many people are wondering what will happen to existing documents like Aadhaar, Voter, or PAN cards when the new smart card comes into play?.

The government has made it clear that these old cards will remain valid.

Each card will still serve its intended purpose.

PAN Card: Will be used for income tax-related matters.

Aadhaar Card: Will be used for banking and other financial transactions.

Voter Card: Will still be crucial for voting.
Ration Card: Will be necessary to obtain food grains from the public distribution system.

The primary aim of the Smart Citizenship Card will be to function solely as proof of Indian citizenship. This will enhance the transparency and security of the identity verification process.
