Although many people are not aware of the stadium’s history or the guy it is named after, it has come to represent the state’s cricketing accomplishments.

The historic Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore foundation stone-laying ceremony was captured in a rare photograph that went popular on social media, transporting cricket fans back in time.

On May 18, 1969, 56 years ago, M Chinnaswamy personally performed a pooja at the location, as seen in this black-and-white photo shared by X user Harish Itagi.

Itagi wrote, “It’s an iconic picture”, highlighting the stadium’s status as the ground for Karnataka cricket as well as the picture’s historical significance.

Although the image is still extensively shared online, its original source is still unknown.

History Of M Chinnaswamy Stadium

When the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Stadium was first constructed, the foundation stone was placed in 1969.

Although many people are not aware of the stadium’s history or the guy it is named after, it has come to represent the state’s cricketing accomplishments. Born in Mandya 124 years ago, Mangalam Chinnaswamy was a visionary administrator in addition to being a cricket fan.

Before retiring in 1990, he worked for over forty years as a lawyer for the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), first as secretary and then as president.

In addition, Chinnaswamy had a number of important national roles, such as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from 1977 to 1980. He was instrumental in getting the site next to Cubbon Park for the stadium and persuading the Mysore government to grant the KSCA a 100-year lease.

In 1987, the KSCA honored his decades of contribution to Indian cricket by renaming the stadium in his honor, four years before his death and apparently against his wishes.

In addition to leaving a legacy in cricket, Chinnaswamy was instrumental in the growth of Bengaluru by founding the MES group of educational institutions.
