For Royal Challengers Bangalore in the current IPL, Josh Hazlewood is comparable to Jasprit Bumrah for the Mumbai Indians.
There is no way RCB can function without him anymore. He has taken seven and six wickets in the PowerPlay and death (final four) overs, respectively, with a pitiful economy of 7.22 and 9.04. Interestingly, when bowling at least two overs in PowerPlay each match, he has only given up 26.86 percent of his team’s PowerPlay runs. He has given up less than 25% in four of these games, with the lowest two percentages being 13.33% and 11.11%.
When RCB plays the Lucknow Super Giants at the Ekana Stadium here on Tuesday, they have a particular reason to be encouraged by his return. The LSG batsmen are coming off a run against Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad, so RCB will look to Hazlewood for early wickets. Prior to the season being suspended, Hazlewood had taken the most wickets of any bowler with six in his opening overs.
Phil Salt, the opener, admitted following his team’s 42-run defeat to Sunrisers Hyderabad here on Friday that RCB appeared poised to reach the 232-run goal after 15 overs.
“I believe we accomplished many positive things. Most of the time, the margins were acceptable. However, tonight’s margins for failure were quite narrow”, he stated.
Tuesday’s margins must be perfect for RCB to finish in the top two of the league table, go to the playoffs with winning momentum, and have two chances to make it to the championship.
