Neeraj Chopra kicked off the year by winning the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, back in April. He then secured a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May, where he set a new national record with a throw of 90.23m.

After nine months of giving it up, Neeraj Chopra has taken back the number 1 spot in men’s javelin throw, as per the latest update from World Athletics.

The current world champion has reached the pinnacle with 1445 ranking points, placing him ahead of Grenada’s Anderson Peters, who holds second place with 1431 points. Neeraj’s position as the world number 1 comes just days before the inaugural NC Classic on July 5, a tournament he has envisioned to promote the sport in India by inviting elite throwers for a one-day event.

Germany’s Julian Weber, who has the top throw of 2025 at 91.06m from the Doha Diamond League, is currently ranked third. Meanwhile, Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem from Pakistan sits in fourth place in the world rankings with 1370 points. Rounding out the top five is Jakub Vadlejch from Czechia, the silver medallist from Tokyo 2020.

Neeraj dropped to second place behind Peters in September 2024, just a month after the Paris Olympics where he snagged a silver medal to go along with his gold from the Tokyo Olympics. Back then, Neeraj mentioned he was dealing with a persistent injury that he felt was affecting his performance.

In 2025, he made a comeback, feeling ‘completely fit’ and has been performing well in all competitions since then. Neeraj kicked off the year with a victory at the Potch Invitational in Potchefstroom, South Africa, in April, and followed it up with a second-place finish at the Doha Diamond League in May, where he set a new national record of 90.23m. Importantly, he also joined the exclusive 90m club.

Later that month, he secured second place again at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial in Poland but bounced back to win at the Paris Diamond League in June with a throw of 88.16m. Just earlier this week, Neeraj also claimed the Ostrava Golden Spike title.

However, he hasn’t gone head-to-head with Nadeem this year yet. That exciting matchup is expected to happen at the World Championships in September.
