Janmashtami or Krishna Janmashtami, is a popular Hindu festival celebrated with a lot of excitement, devotion, and respect every year.

It honors the birth of Lord Krishna, who is regarded as one of the most important deities in Hinduism and represents divinity, love, and righteousness.

The festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Mathura (believed to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna), as well as in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, and even in the northeastern states like Assam and Manipur.

Krishna Janmashtami is often referred to as ‘Krishnashtami’, ‘Gokulashtami’, ‘Ashtami Rohini’, ‘Srikrishna Jayanti’, and ‘Sree Jayanthi’.

The festival takes place on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha, which is the dark half of the month in Bhadrapada, as per the Hindu lunar calendar. This usually lines up with August or September in the Gregorian calendar.

This year, Krishna Janmashtami falls on Saturday, August 16, 2025, marking the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, and Dahi Handi will take place on the same day as Janmashtami.

As per Drik Panchang, the Nishita Puja starts at 12:04 AM on August 16 and wraps up at 12:47 AM.

Followers celebrate the festival by fasting, praying, meditating, and singing devotional songs (bhajans) all day and night.

Numerous temples also host detailed ceremonies that reenact moments from Krishna’s life, especially his birth and childhood adventures.
