On Wednesday (August 27, 2025), the Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the green light to India’s proposal to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, declaring Ahmedabad as the “perfect” location due to its “top-notch stadiums, advanced training facilities, and a vibrant sports culture”.

The choice was made just a few days after the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) approved the proposal, which came after the ‘Expression of Interest’ was submitted back in March.

August 31 is the final date to submit the bid for the event, and the IOA is expected to wrap up the formalities within the next 48 hours.

India last hosted the CWG back in 2010.

The General Assembly of Commonwealth Sport will choose the host country in the last week of November in Glasgow.

India’s chances of securing the event have improved since Canada has withdrawn from the competition due to budget issues.

The PIB statement following the cabinet meeting mentioned that Ahmedabad is the perfect city to host the Games.

Ahmedabad stands out as a fantastic host city with its top-notch stadiums, state of the art training facilities, and a vibrant sports culture.

The Narendra Modi Stadium, which is the largest stadium globally, has already proven its worth by successfully hosting the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup Final.

India is also looking to host the 2036 Olympic Games, and Ahmedabad is a strong contender for that as well. The city is enhancing its sports infrastructure with this goal in mind.

The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is one of the key venues currently being built, and in addition to the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, it will feature an aquatics center and a football stadium, plus two indoor sports arenas.

Athletes from 72 nations take part in the Commonwealth Games, and the government believes that this event will “benefit local businesses and generate revenue”.

Hosting the CWG in India would not only be about sports. It would have a lasting effect by boosting tourism, creating jobs, and inspiring countless young athletes.

Moreover, many professionals will find opportunities in areas like Sports Science, Event Operations and Management, Logistics and Transport Coordination, Broadcasting and Media, IT and Communications, Public Relations, and more.

The government believes that hosting a “globally prestigious event” will cultivate a strong sense of national pride and unity.

The 2026 CWG, set to take place in Glasgow, has been significantly reduced in scale to keep the budget in check.

Consequently, some key sports like wrestling, shooting, badminton, and hockey have been excluded from the lineup.

Nevertheless, the IOA has assured that the 2030 Games, if hosted in India, will feature a comprehensive lineup that includes all the sports omitted by Glasgow.

“The goal is to include all our medal winning sports like shooting, archery, wrestling, etc. Our traditional games like kabaddi and kho kho should also be included”, IOA joint secretary Kalyan Chaubey stated after an IOA SGM in Delhi earlier this month.
