Top ranked player Jannik Sinner kicked off his quest for consecutive U.S. Open titles with a decisive win on Tuesday (August 26, 2025), while the favorite in the women’s draw, Iga Swiatek, cruised into the second round.

Italian sensation Sinner breezed through with a 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 victory against Czech player and world number 89, Vit Kopriva, taking only 1 hour and 38 minutes to move on to the next round.

“It’s awesome to be back here. Clearly, this tournament is really special”, Sinner said.

He tries to be the first man to win the US Open back to back since Roger Federer took home 5 titles in a row from 2004 to 2008.

Sinner, 24, is up against Alexei Popyrin in the third round.

“I’m really glad to be healthy again”, Sinner said, after having to pull out of last week’s Cincinnati Open final against Carlos Alcaraz.

“I have great memories from last year. Each year brings something new. You come into this tournament hoping to start off on the right foot, and I feel like I did that”, he continued.

Sinner kicked off strong on the Arthur Ashe Stadium court, and Poland’s Swiatek matched that intensity with a decisive 6-1, 6-2 victory over Colombia’s Emiliana Arango.

U.S. Open – Sinner And Swiatek

The 24 year old from Poland maintained control throughout the match against the 84th ranked Arango, overpowering her with a mix of powerful groundstrokes and some skillful net play.

This win makes Swiatek the first woman ever to achieve 65 consecutive first round victories at the WTA level, breaking Monica Seles’ previous record of 64.

Swiatek is a die hard “Swiftie” – the term for Taylor Swift’s countless devoted fans and she couldn’t contain her joy upon hearing about the singer’s upcoming wedding.

“I’m just thrilled for her, because she truly deserves the best”, Swiatek expressed.

The six time Grand Slam singles champion who clinched victory in New York in 2022 – is set to compete against the Netherlands’ Suzan Lamens in the second round.

While Sinner and Swiatek made their way into the second round with ease, 2023 women’s singles champion Coco Gauff had to fight hard to get past Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in a tough late-night match that lasted just under three hours.

Gauff struggled to win, two time former champion Naomi Osaka had no trouble defeating Belgium’s Green Minnen 6-3, 6-4.

The Japanese ex-world number one enjoyed returning to a venue she considers a second home.

“Every time I play here, the vibe feels like home, and it truly is home for me”, Osaka shared.
