The scientists Ajith Kumar T.T. and P. R Divya from the Centre for Peninsular Aquatic Genetic Resources, which is under NBFGR in Kochi, published their research findings in the journal Current Science.

Scientists at the National Bureau of Fish Genetic Resources (NBFGR) say they’ve created designer clownfish by cross breeding two species of clownfish – the male Amphiprion percula and the female Amphiprion ocellaris.

The NBFGR has been using hatchery production technology for over a dozen clownfish species with low saline water.

The designer clownfish was produced at the hatchery located at the Coastal and Marine Biodiversity Centre in Airoli, Mumbai.

The Bureau partnered with the Tribal Development department of the Tamil Nadu government to promote livelihoods for the tribal community in the Pichavaram and Pulicat areas.

The designer clownfish available at Annamalai University will be propagated and supplied to beneficiaries in these regions, allowing them to rear them using a cluster mode approach (community aquaculture), which is expected to yield promising returns for them.
