The FASTag Annual Pass was introduced on August 15, 2025, by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI).

It offers private vehicle owners a hassle free prepaid toll solution for journeys on certain National Highways (NH) and National Expressways (NE).

For a one-time payment of Rs 3,000, users can enjoy up to 200 toll-free trips in a year or travel for one year, whichever happens first.

The pass has quickly gained popularity, with more than five lakh subscriptions in just four days.

However, it’s crucial to remember that this pass isn’t valid on every highway or expressway, especially those run by state authorities.

For these excluded routes, tolls need to be paid through the regular FASTag account.

The FASTag Annual Pass is only good for toll plazas managed by NHAI and the central government.

You can’t use it on expressways run by the state or on local roads.

Some important exclusions are:

1)Yamuna Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)

2)Purvanchal Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)

3)Bundelkhand Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)

4)Agra-Lucknow Expressway (Uttar Pradesh)

5)Samruddhi Mahamarg (Maharashtra) – a state highway that isn’t included in the scheme.

6)Mumbai-Pune Expressway – run by the
Maharashtra State Road Development
Corporation (MSRDC)

7)Atal Setu (Goa) – a bridge managed by the state with its own toll system

8)Other state highways or toll roads that are managed by the state

Also, tolls for commercial fleets, taxis, or parking fees are not included in the pass coverage.

On these routes, even if you have an activated FASTag Annual Pass, tolls will be taken from your regular FASTag account balance.

Why the FASTag annual pass doesn’t work on these route

The expressways that are left out are state highways run by state agencies instead of NHAI.

The FASTag Annual Pass was made just for national highways and expressways that fall under central authority, so tolls on
routes managed by the state aren’t part of the scheme.

Who is eligible to apply for the FASTag annual pass?

The annual pass is designed for private, non commercial vehicles like cars, jeeps, and vans.

Eligibility requires you to have an active FASTag linked to your vehicle registration.

Keep in mind, the pass is non transferable. If you use it on a different vehicle, it will be deactivated.

For point based toll plazas, a one-way trip counts as one trip, while a return trip counts as two.

In closed or ticketed systems, a complete entry to exit journey is considered one trip.

This pass doesn’t cover commercial vehicles, taxis, yellow plate vehicles, two wheelers, or vehicles that are registered only by chassis number.

Here’s how to activate your FASTag annual pass:

1)Open the Rajmarg Yatra app or head over to the official NHAI/MORTH portal.

2)Enter your Vehicle Registration Number (VRN) and FASTag ID for verification.

3)Make a payment of Rs 3,000 using UPI, net banking, or a card.

4)You’ll get a confirmation through SMS or an app notification(activation usually happens within two hours).

5)Two accounts will be set up for your FASTag: one for the annual pass and another for regular payments.

Vehicles that are registered solely by their chassis number need to update their registration first in order to get the annual pass.

Renewal and perks of the FASTag annual pass

When the FASTag expires, it automatically switches back to standard mode.

If travelers want to keep enjoying the annual convenience, they can renew it by paying Rs 3,000 once more.

The prepaid model can help frequent long distance travelers save thousands of rupees each year, cut down on delays at toll plazas, and make highway travel smoother.

This initiative is likely to motivate more individuals to adopt FASTag for a hassle free journey.

It also aligns with the government’s efforts to promote digital payments and enhance highway operations.

However, those who frequently use state managed expressways should be ready to pay the standard tolls at those spots.

As its popularity continues to rise, this scheme might eventually expand to cover more highways through agreements between state and central authorities.

For the time being, private vehicle owners are reaping the most benefits, while commercial fleets will have to wait for a similar program.

Is the FASTag Annual Pass available for every type of vehicle?

The FASTag Annual Pass isn’t available for every type of vehicle.

It’s specifically for private, non commercial cars, jeeps, and vans, as confirmed by the VAHAN database.

If you try to use the Annual Pass on a commercial vehicle, it will be deactivated right away without any warning.
