Onam is a 10 day harvest festival celebrated by the Malayali community both in Kerala and around the globe.

The festival celebrates the arrival of the Vamana avatar of Vishnu and the return of King Mahabali.

Onam is celebrated during the Chingam month of the Malayalam solar calendar, which typically falls between August and September in the Gregorian calendar.

This year, the Onam celebrations kick off on August 26, 2025, and wrap up with Thiruvonam on Friday, September 5, 2025.

They mark the festival by giving their homes a thorough clean, enjoying early morning baths, adorning their spaces with flowers, making Pookalam (colorful designs) outside their houses, and feasting on Onam Sandhya, a meal that everyone in the family helps prepare and is traditionally eaten with hands.

In the southern state, families whip up different kinds of banana chips, which are a beloved dish in Kerala, to enjoy during the feast.

They also share gifts of ‘onakkodi’ (new clothes), and in their yards, they hang a swing from a tall tree branch, decorating it with ‘oonjal’ flowers.
