The Indian women’s hockey team is looking to push through tough competition and injury challenges as they aim for a World Cup spot at the Asia Cup in Hangzhou from September 4 to 15.

The 20 member team announced for the continental event on Thursday is missing two key players – goalkeeper and veteran Savita Punia, along with seasoned midfielder Sushila Chanu – both sidelined due to significant injuries.

With them out, captain Salima Tete will need to take on extra responsibility, and Bichu Devi, who has been Savita’s long time backup, will be eager to step out of her senior colleague’s shadow and show what she can do in a big tournament.

Additionally, Udita is back for her first game since getting married and is expected to strengthen the defense.

Unlike the men, it’s going to be a tougher challenge for the Indian women to come out on top in the competition, especially with the host country, China, who are the Paris Olympics silver medallists and currently ranked 4th in the world, along with Japan, ranked 12th, as potential obstacles.

India has been placed in Pool B alongside Japan, Thailand, and Singapore, while Pool A consists of China, Malaysia, Korea, and Chinese Taipei.

Although making it to the top two in their group might not be too hard, reaching the finals and clinching the title will be a much bigger challenge.

“The group has been training really hard, and we’ve aimed to find the right mix of seasoned players and fresh talent. Our goal is to play an aggressive and disciplined style of hockey. Each match will test our composure, fitness, and tactical skills. The players are eager to step up to the challenge”, said coach Harendra Singh.
