In a significant change, Indian Railways has declared that beginning July 1, 2025, only users verified through Aadhaar will be allowed to book tatkal train tickets. On June 10, 2025, the Railway Ministry sent out a notice to all railway zones, explaining that this measure is intended “to guarantee that the advantages of the Tatkal Scheme reach the everyday users”.

The official announcement stated that starting from 01-07-2025, tickets for the Tatkal scheme can only be booked by Aadhaar authenticated users through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) website or its app.

Additionally, the ministry has announced that starting July 15, 2025, travelers will have to go through an extra Aadhaar-based OTP verification step for Tatkal reservations.

New Tatkal Ticket Rules 2025 Explained

From July 1, 2025, train tickets under the Indian Railways’ Tatkal scheme will only be available for booking through the IRCTC website or its mobile app, and this is exclusively for passengers or users who have finished their Aadhaar authentication process.

  • Also, from July 15, 2025, the ministry has required that travelers go through an extra Aadhaar-linked OTP verification when they make Tatkal reservations.
  • The directive also specified limitations for the authorized ticketing agents of Indian Railways concerning Tatkal bookings.
  • These agents won’t be able to book first-day Tatkal tickets in the first 30 minutes of the booking window. The ban is in effect from 10:00 am to 10:30 am for air-conditioned classes and from 11:00 am to 11:30 am for non-air-conditioned classes.

The Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) and IRCTC have been directed by the ministry to make the necessary system changes and communicate these updates to all zonal railway divisions.
