After encountering issues on the portal, the income tax department had extended the deadline for individuals and those not required to have their accounts audited by one day on September 15.

By September 16, over 7.54 crore ITRs had been filed, with 1.28 crore taxpayers having paid self assessment tax by that date.

According to a statement from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the income tax return filing portal is functioning well, and over 7.57 crore ITRs have been submitted as of September 23, 2025.

As of September 24, around 4.02 lakh tax audit reports have been uploaded, with more than 60,000 of those submitted just on September 24 itself.

On Thursday, September 25, 2025, the Income Tax department announced that the deadline for submitting audit reports for the 2024-25 fiscal year has been pushed back by a month to October 31.

The CBDT mentioned that it has received feedback from various professional groups, including chartered accountant associations, pointing out some challenges that taxpayers and practitioners are facing in completing the audit reports on time.

“However, considering the concerns raised by tax practitioners and their statements before the Hon’ble Courts, the ‘specified date’ for submitting the audit report under any section of the Income-Tax Act, 1961, for the previous year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26).. has been pushed back from September 30, 2025, to October 31, 2025”, the CBDT stated.

It was also clarified that the Income Tax e-filing portal has been running smoothly without any technical issues, and tax audit reports are being uploaded successfully.

The system is stable and fully operational, allowing for the submission of various statutory forms and reports, they added.
