On Friday, October 10, 2025, Manipur government decided to ban two brands of cough syrup after discovering they contained a “highly toxic chemical”.

A notice from the Drugs Control Administration, part of the Directorate of Health Services, issued a “public alert” advising consumers, retailers, and healthcare professionals to avoid buying and using the two cough syrup brands.

They’ve told all retailers, distributors, and pharmacies to immediately remove the affected batches from the shelves and to update them on how they’re doing with that.

Reasons For Banning

According to reports from the Madhya Pradesh Government Drug Testing Laboratory, the syrups “Relife” and “Resipfresh TR”, both produced in Gujarat.

It were found to be contaminated with diethylene glycol, a harmful industrial solvent that can lead to severe poisoning, kidney failure, and even death.

Healthcare professionals have been warned to be vigilant for signs of diethylene glycol poisoning in patients who might have taken the syrups, as stated in the announcement.

The Drugs Control Department has banned the sale in Manipur.

To stop any further distribution of these two cough syrups, surveillance has been ramped up in medical shops and hospitals throughout the state.
