In the jungles of South and Central America, there’s a tiny insect known as the bullet ant.

It may seem like just a big black ant at first, but don’t be deceived by its size.

This little guy has what a lot of scientists refer to as the most excruciating sting on the planet.

Absolutely, it’s more agonizing than a bee or wasp sting.

Some folks say it feels like getting shot, that’s how the bullet ant earned its name.

Those who have experienced a sting describe the pain as burning, throbbing, and all consuming, lasting for as long as 24 hours.

Bullet ants can grow up to 1.2 inches long, making them quite large for ants, with their reddish black bodies and strong mandibles.

Their most frightening feature is their stinger, which can inject venom that leads to excruciating, burning pain that can last for up to 24 hours.

The venom has a neurotoxic peptide known as poneratoxin, which disrupts nerve signals, leading to severe pain and muscle spasms.

The pain isn’t just severe,it’s intensely traumatic. Pure, intense, brilliant pain. It’s like walking over flaming charcoal with a 3 inch nail stuck in your heel.

The ant isn’t typically a deadly threat to people, its sting can lead to intense pain, shaking, temporary paralysis, and excessive sweating.

For those with allergies or other health issues, the effects can be much worse.

Interestingly, in certain Amazonian tribal cultures, the sting of the bullet ant is a key part of initiation ceremonies for manhood.

Young boys from the Satere Mawe tribe in Brazil put their hands into gloves packed with bullet ants and go through the stings multiple times – sometimes as many as 20 – to demonstrate their strength and courage.
