India’s active Covid cases have surpassed 6,000, with 769 new cases reported in the last 48 hours, as per the data released by the Union health ministry on Sunday.

According to INSACOG statistics, there have been around 163 cases of the recently discovered COVID-19 variation XFG identified in India.

The recombinant XFG variant carries four important spike mutations and has quickly spread worldwide.

Based on information from the Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium (INSACOG), the XFG variant of the COVID-19 virus has been identified in 163 samples overall — with the most (89) coming from Maharashtra, followed by Tamil Nadu (16), Kerala (15), Gujarat (11), and Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal (six each).

In May, there were 159 samples that showed the XFG variant, while two samples were found in April and another two in June, according to the data.
